SDEA – South Door Easy Access

Easy Access for Wheelchairs, Pushchairs and People with Walking Difficulties

The Parochial Church Council is proposing to lower the external step to the South Door porch and to lower the existing level of the porch floor to the level of the church floor.

The existing single side door in the porch, which is currently used for access, would be permanently closed so that everyone entering the church would go through the existing double doors.  Both these and the outside doors would be extended to the new lower floor  level and would have secure locks.

It has also been suggested that glass is inserted into the interior double door panels so that the outside doors can be left open whilst services and functions are taking place.

This type of work is expensive and whilst the church has some funds available, the PCC hope to obtain grants towards the work but applications for grant cannot be submitted until legal permission from the Diocese has been obtained (a Faculty).  Final plans are currently being prepared and once these are received, application will be made to the Diocese and the plans published on this website.

The alterations to the porch should make access easy for anyone who uses a wheelchair or who has difficulty with steps.  It is hoped that by making these alterations, more people who may like to attend church services or functions but cannot do so because of difficulty with access, will be encouraged to come along.  Families who have pushchairs will  find access much easier and more people will be able to attend large events such as Remembrance Sunday.

Costs are estimated to be in the region of £37,500 excluding VAT (it is expected that VAT will be able to be reclaimed once the works are finalised).

Should anyone wish to make a donation towards the proposed works, this would be very welcome.  Almost everyone needs to use the church occasionally and if you would like to contribute an amount, however small or large, this would be greatly appreciated.
